Perfume Bottle Collections Make Good Choices

By Candice Sabrina

Some people love wearing perfume, others just like to look at the bottles themselves. For those who enjoy creating collections, a perfume bottle can be the start of not only a lovely looking display, but also a valuable one.

An antique perfume bottle can range in price from a few dollars to thousands. To get started on one of these collections, it's a good idea for a want-to-be collector on a budget to make a few rules of the game first. These include:

* Looks. When a perfume bottle collection is desired, those looking for great buys will find the prices run the gamut. To ensure a collection that's affordable and enjoyable, it's a good idea for a collector on a budget to make sure to buy only those bottles he or she really loves.

If this is the biggest rule of thumb, there really isn't a bad purchase to be made. Buying just for price and value is okay, but to truly create a collection that's prized, looks should come into play in a very big way.

* Pricing. As it's been said, a perfume bottle collection can have a much higher price tag than many might think. Set a price limit on individual buys and try to stick with it as possible.

* Always shop around. Perhaps one of the best things about creating an antique perfume bottle collection is the fact a person never knows where a great bottle will turn up. From online auction sites and estate sales to antique shops and barn sales, these bottles can be found all over the place. The pricing will depend on the bottle in question and the location it's found. Sometimes some great buys can be had at regular garage sales.

The types of perfume bottle choices collectors can come across are pretty amazing. Older bottles tend to be a lot more decorative and ornate than those on the market today. Plus, often tines, these older bottles didn't have brand names on them, as they were seen as works of art on their own. This little fact lends to the beauty of the bottles, because they often are not encumbered with word or visible trademark.

Some of the types include:

Antique cut glass: Many perfume bottle creations in the 1800s and early 1900s were made out of hand-cut glass. These little bottles were often designed to look as pretty as their contents smelled. These bottles can range from a few dollars to thousands, depending.

Silver designs: Many antique bottles were made with glass insides and intricate silver designs on the outer surface. These bottles are mini works of art on their own.

Crystal: Crystal pressed and etch glass designs were and remain very popular. The pricing depends on the quality of the crystal and often the period it was made.

Ceramics: A lot of bottle designs in the 1920s were made with blown glass and ceramics. With hand painted pictures on the outside of the bottles, some of these creations are one-of-a-kind treasures.

A perfume bottle collection can be a great way to get into collecting items that are small and quite attractive. Whether it's antique silver, crystal, cut glass or all of the above, these bottles are considered by many to be individual works of art.

10 worst 10 best gifts for Linda

Special gift for Linda including Valentine’s day, Linda Perfume

Best times to give Linda a gift - valentines, birthday, Christmas, Mothers day, any day, friendship, left school, holiday, anniversary, anytime, Linda perfume anytime, challenging day, any day.

We all love to receive gifts, any day.

Who needs a special day to give someone a gift, simplicity, and the unexpected can sometimes be the best time to give someone a gift. I have listed some of the best and worst presents my poor sister Linda and I have received over the years. Hopefully this can be a guideline to the misinformed friends and men in our lives, of what is the best gift for the special friends and ladies in their lives.

This is tongue in cheek, however, most ladies that I have spoken to have received such inappropriate and some even have received wonderful gifts in their lifetimes.

These are not in any particular order, but I hope it will give our beloveds something to think about with Valentine's Day just around the corner and maybe anytime to give Linda a gift is a good time.

Gift for Linda- 10 Worst List

1. Kitchen appliances i.e. a bread maker

2. Food for meal preparation, who wants to cook on their own birthday

3. Clothes, totally wrong size (she was that size, 2 years ago)

4. Wilting Flowers (last ones, on special)

5. Technology messages, unless you're tech savvy -Email, SMS,Tweet

6. Photos of you (most of us hate photos of ourself)

7. Sewing machine to make your own clothes, you don't sew

8. Hot champagne

9. Hot chocolates

10. A blind date

Gift for Linda - 10 Best List - Linda Perfume

1. Any personally picked out perfume but especially Linda perfume

2. 1 day at a spa retreat -pampering of any sort, massage, nails, facial

3. Bottle of cold champagne

4. Cold chocolates, ready to eat

5. Fresh flowers

6. Gift vouchers to wonderful boutiques

7. Recycled present from something you have given

8. If kids, if no kids still - a day to herself, time to just be yourself, no phones

9. Lunch/dinner out at favourite restaurant

10. A handwritten note (if they can write) - even better handmade card

Is this just our family and loved ones friends who do this or is it a sign of the times, quick, fast what's on special Whatever happened to notepaper and a little thank you note posted in an envelope with a stamp or left in your mailbox, left on your desk, on your pillow (how romantic). These little gestures do not cost a lot, but can take a few extra minutes of time.

Maybe we should be teaching our children a thing or two about what gifts mean, and who knows we may be surprised next time around.

The absolute best gift my sister got was the Linda Perfume, how appropriate; you could not go wrong with that, even if there is no card.

Modern Day Definitions for Perfume Concentrations

I will demystify the perfume industry terminology by giving you an easy guide to perfume concentrations.  Like most users, we get completely overwhelmed when at the perfume counter with the slick salesperson; however, most have only been trained in one variety of scent the one they are trying to sell you.  This is not their fault; however, as we all know it is quite frustrating for us the perfume devotees who want more information, on what it is made of and how long it will last.

Perfumes all start with the original aromatic compound made up of various essential oils and natural ingredients, we hope, using not too many synthetic substitutes, today.  The perfume types below explain how much of the aromatic compound is diluted in with the water or ethanol (alcohol) to make up these different perfume categories.

Definitions of the various perfume types and the concentration does vary between perfume makers, however, this should be taken as an easy guide for the everyday user to understand:-

  • Perfume extracts contains 15-40% of the aromatic compound; typically around 20%.  Scent last approximately 8 to 12 hours
  • Eau de Parfum/Parfum de Toilette (EDP) typically contains around 15% of the aromatic compound. Scent lasts approximately 6 – 8 hours
  • Eau to Toilette (EDT), the most common perfume description/type sold contains about 10-15% aromatic compound.  Scent lasts approximately 4 – 6 hours
  • Eau de Cologne (EDC), average about 5% of aromatic compound.  Initially very refreshing but will wear off quickly.  Great for application after a shower.
  • After Shave, and Splash Colognes only contain about 1-3% aromatic compound.  Initially quite refreshing but will wear off very quickly.

It is interesting that most people think that after shaves and men’s cologne is the same thing, and usually thinks these are stronger than the male EDT Eau de Toilette.  In fact, the EDT will outlast both the after shave and the cologne fragrance over time after the original application.  The length of time the perfume scent lasts is equated to the strength of the aromatic compound base in the perfume.  Obviously each perfume house has their own secret formulas but the above will serve as an easy everyday guide for us mere perfume lovers to understand.

You might even find you now know more than most the sales persons who try to sell you perfumes.  A lot of perfume houses will have one name for a scent, but it may come in different strengths going by the above descriptions, size of the bottle has nothing to do with the strength or dilution of the aromatic compound, so don't be fooled by size.

You may now know more than most sales persons when it comes to the descriptions of perfume types, and their diluted strength.  Perfume making is a wonderful tradition that started off in Mesopotamia and Egypt many centuries ago!  We can only hope that the valuable origins and traditions of perfume making continue without the use of too many synthetics into the future.

O Boticario Perfume is one of the perfume companies I know of, that continues perfume making in this traditional way.  How lucky we are to have companies like this still willing to go to extraordinary lengths using today’s technology to gather the world’s most unique scents without resorting to synthetic substitutes.
